Ancient monuments were destroyed to deliver material for a new wall with which the Ottomans surrounded the city in 1778. The history of this architectural monument has been quite tumultuous. The temple was converted into a Christian church, then in the 17th century it was completely dismantled by the Ottoman Turks who required its material to create fortifications.
